My Favorite Season

West Needle Mountain from US Highway 550, San Juan Mountains, Colorado

My favorite trees, too. Aspen are lovely in any season but in Autumn they are a joy to see. For a few weeks in late September and early October, their leaves turn bright yellow to red, depending on species variation and environmental factors. You can see the spectrum of color here in this shot, with the grove in the center only yellow, yet some outliers have had just the right conditions to have turned red.

In North America, they are known as "quaking Aspen" due to the shape of the leaves, which flutter in the wind like butterflies. Combine their Autumn colors, sunlight and a good breeze, and you have one of nature's most beautiful moments.
