The Sentinel
Young bull elk, Great Smoky Mountains National Park, North Carolina
A lucky, unplanned shot. I was not set up for wildlife photography at the time when I spotted these three while driving on the main North-South road through the park. Rather than risk losing the moment, I kept the 24-70mm on the camera, getting out of my Jeep very carefully. This fellow did not like that at all and he eyed me warily while his rivals kept grazing. Good choice on not switching the lens, as within seconds of taking this shot a family rolled up noisily right in front of my vehicle and a woman jumped out of their car with smart phone in hand. Off the bulls went, into the woods. She then complained quite loudly about them leaving so quickly before she could get a photo...
I very much appreciate my prime lenses, but sometimes running around with a tele mounted is a better choice.
