Poetry of the Earth

San Juan Mountains, Colorado

"The poetry of the earth is never dead." - John Keats

The San Juan Mountains in eastern Colorado are one of the most wonderful areas in America to witness the beauty of autumn, especially in late September and early October. The mountains flourish with brilliant yellow-to-red hues of late season aspen leaves, contrasted with the deep colors of evergreen blue spruce and Douglas-firs. The San Juans themselves frequently feature rich deposits of iron and other minerals that when exposed to the elements turn surprisingly orange and even red in some areas. Landscape poetry.

One of the easiest ways to see the area is by driving the fantastic 236-mile San Juan Scenic Skyway, which loops around southwestern Colorado and cuts through the heart of the San Juans. Famous towns and cities are reached by the Skyway, such as Durango, Silverton, Ouray, Telluride...but the mountains are the real reason to make the trip, especially in autumn.
