The Oudeschans, Amsterdam

No trip to Amsterdam is complete without the admittedly cliched shot of a charming canal, and few are easier and more charming than the Oudeschans, here with its iconic Montelbaan tower (1516). Just south of Amsterdam Central train station, it's within easy walking distance of city center.

The area is an historic district, being home to the Dutch West India Company, and therefore sadly has a connection with the Atlantic slave trade. But now many of the boats here carry happy tourists enjoying a pleasant canal ride.

What I liked most about the area were the many trees along the canal, which show the autumn colors of October more than anywhere else I went to in this fascinating city.
