World War II Memorial, Washington DC
In honor of Memorial Day here in the USA, when we remember those who gave their lives serving our nation, here is the National World War II Memorial on the Washington Mall.
Of all the many monuments and memorials in Washington D.C., the World War II and Lincoln Memorials are my personal favorites, and they sit opposite each other lying East-West with the Reflecting Pool in between. The side you see here is looking North, and is in remembrance of the war fought in the Atlantic and European Theaters. The south side of the memorial which is behind me is in honor of the war fought in the Pacific Theater.
56 granite pillars form a semi-circle around these fountains, one for each US state and the eight territories associated with the USA at war’s end in 1945. The name of each state or territory is etched into the top of each pillar, along with a mounted wreath in honor of those who lost their lives.
On the west side of the memorial is the Freedom Wall, where 4,048 mounted gold stars reflect above a pool. Each star represents 100 Americans who died in the war. When Americans refer to Gold Star families, they mean families who lost loved ones due to military service. The inscription here at the wall reads, “Here we mark the price of freedom”.
It’s actually a very peaceful place, especially at sunrise, when you can listen to the rush of water and enjoy the flow of the fountains without traffic or tourists around.
Selected for FLICKR Explore May 25, 2020, # 190. Appropriately, Memorial Day in the USA.
