Blue Angels Aerobatic Team

The Blue Angels is the United States Navy's flight demonstration squadron, flown by five Navy pilots and one Marine Corps pilot (the USMC is a Department of the Navy).

They were formed in 1946 and are the world's second oldest formal aerobatic team (the French beat us to being the first back in 1931). Although they have flown many different front line fighter aircraft in their time, their current ride is the McDonnell Douglas F/A-18 Hornet with its two powerful General Electric F404 engines.

The Blue Angels perform at least 60 airshows every year in the US and Canada. Since 1946, they've flown for more than 500 million people. They also regularly perform charity work in schools and hospitals.

Their friendly competitors are the world's third oldest aerobatic team, the United States Air Force Thunderbirds, formed in 1953, who fly the General Dynamics F-16 Fighting Falcon.
