Durango & Silverton Rounding Treasure Pass
The Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad (D&SNG) runs north from downtown Durango through the Animus Valley and San Juan National Forest to Silverton, Colorado. The line has run continuously since 1881 and is one of the few places in the U.S. which has run only steam engines for its entire history. D&SNG is a 3 ft narrow-gauge heritage railroad that operates 45 miles (73 km) of track. Some rolling stock dates back to the 1880s. It is both a designated National Historic Landmark and is also an Historic Civil Engineering Landmark.
Here at Treasure Pass where Old Highway 550 crosses over the track, there is this lovely curve providing a wonderful view. The D&SNG runs north in the morning when the light is not optimum for this best angle. But it does allow for highlighted steam...
