Great Falls National Park, Virginia
Great Falls is one of my favorite places where I live. Here the Potomac River works its way through significant rapids and multiple sudden drops in elevation. Virginia and Maryland are separated by the great Potomac, and you can view the Falls from both sides. On the Maryland side it is known as the C&O Canal National Park. While the Virginia side has the best view of the Falls themselves and a mildly challenging trail, Maryland has more trails and views of the multiple tributary falls which feed into the river.
Whenever I have visitors, I do my best to get them to Great Falls, as it makes for a terrific nature-break from all of Washington DC's monuments and museums. These National Parks are surprisingly close, with both the Maryland and Virginia sides each only about 17 miles from the Washington Monument.
I used an ND8 filter to get a longer exposure in order to capture the swift motion of water at this ideal viewing point for the falls.
