Hello Venice
A casual greeting for yet another tourist in this magnificent city, from one of its most iconic denizens: a gondolier, going about his business on the Grand Canal. I love this city, it lives up to all the hype, and if you stay a while, surpasses it.
The Grand Canal is the lungs, major artery and highway of Venice. The banks are lined with more than 170 buildings, most of which date from the 13th to the 18th century, and display up front the art and architecture created by the Republic of Venice thoughout its storied history. The churches along the canal include the impressive basilica of Santa Maria della Salute.
The majority of these wonderful palaces emerge from water without pavement, which allows for great views of these buildings on the Grand Canal by boat.
Because most of the city's traffic goes along the Canal rather than across it, only one bridge crossed the canal until the 19th century, the Rialto Bridge. There are currently three more bridges, the Ponte degli Scalzi, the Ponte dell'Accademia, and the Ponte della Costituzione. Make sure you take the time to see the entire Grand Canal by boat, the way it was meant to be seen.
