This cityscape is from the top of Il Duomo di Firenze, the Basilica of Santa Maria del Fior, looking West-by-Southwest. In the right foreground is the cathedral's bell tower or "Campanile”. It was designed by Giotto di Bondone and is one of the highlights of Florence’s Gothic architecture, which is considered part of the early Renaissance period. It rises to 85 meters (278 ft) and was completed by 1359. The top can be reached by climbing 414 steps.
