Hook January 1964

Early on a freezing cold morning, with the frost still on rails and sleepers, Bulleid 'Merchant Navy' Pacific 35017 'Belgian Marine' races through Hook on the down through line with an express from Waterloo. There are no signs of the impending electrification, and a single covered van sits in the down freight spur. The Bulleid's exhaust is drifting forward across the smokebox in front of the chimney, which gives an indication of how fast it was travelling.
