The Modbeats at Basingstoke Carnival Hall May 1965
In the days before I was considered competent enough to wield an instrument on stage I was the singer and frontman. In hindsight maybe I should have stuck with that - no-one notices the rhythm section! Len Clarke is on bass, playing a right-handed Egmond bass left-handed, through a Vox AC15. Kevin Gardner is next to him playing rhythm guitar (a Futurama, I think) and Barry Lewis is on drums. Chris Maybury is on lead guitar, playing a rather nice Hofner archtop through an amp he built himself. Note Kevin and Len's mike tied on with washing line, and the black looks from the Scottish Country Dancing troupe on the left. They were supposed to be the main attraction, but we got all the screams! The occasion? - the selection dance for the Junior Carnival Queen (these things were done in style in the 60s!)
