VIRGINIA OR COMMON OPOSSUM (Didelphimorphia)
The first garden visitor to our holiday accommodation in Florida! The Opossum is the largest marsupial found in the western hemisphere and are the only marsupial to be found in North America and Canada. They grow to around 30 inches (80cms) of which the long scaley and hairless tail forms a fair part. The Opossum can give birth to up to 20 young, each one being only a centimetre or so in size. Not all generally survive. The youngsters can climb onto the mothers back and stay there whilst she is searching for food. The opossum are good tree climbers and eat a varied diet including insects, worms and snakes.
