Stuff - May BJP

Most of us, after we’ve lived in the same place for a number of years, begin to accumulate a few too many things. Right? Do you know what I mean? Lately the amount of stuff I have has begun to bother me; everything looks cluttered, no place to put anything, can't find things, don't recall what I have.

So this piece is about my relationship to my stuff. I thought it would be a jumbled mess. But, to my great surprise, it looks joyful, even pretty. How can that be?

Writing a poem based on this piece, I discovered the answer. My stuff is all about memories, especially the good ones, and fear of forgetting.

My conclusion: why not let go of the stuff, knowing that some memories will remain for a long time, others will fade? It’s life. It’s aging. It’s OK.

For those who like to know:

-- fabric: cotton batik

-- thread: nymo, size D

-- stabalizer: interleaving paper

-- finished size of block: 9 1/4 inches across the diagonal

-- length of the "arms" on the beaded X-shape: 5 inches

-- beads: size 15, 11 and 8 seed beads, turquoise buttons, ribbons, rick-rack, fabric scraps, plastic horse, sequins, brass bells, ostrich egg shell discs, brass key, pressed glass shapes

-- eventual plan: join the twelve beaded blocks to make a wall quilt
