Crewe South shed 1965

A number of prints have recently come into my possession via a family member who acquired them during a house clearance. The black and white images span the period from 1963 to 1967, although only a couple have any details with them. All are printed on Agfa photo paper and are 5 x 3.5".

There are no details of the photographer and most of the locations are guesswork. All credits to the original (and unknown) photographer.

The rear of the image carries the penciled annotation "Crewe South 1965". BR Standard Class 7 (aka Britannia class) No 70025 'Western Star' is in steam in the shed yard. Displaying hand-painted name and smokebox plates, 70025 also shows the Western region modification to the smoke deflectors.

Following the fatal 1955 Milton crash which was partially caused by the original smoke deflector handrails contributing to a restricted field of view for the driver, all WR-allocated Brits had their handrails removed in favor of cut-out hand holds.

Allocated to Cardiff Canton from new in 1952, 70025 gradually made its way north via Aston, Crewe North, Crewe South, Llandudno Jnc and finally Carlisle Kingmoor sheds, ending its working days in 1967. Cut up in 1968, 70025 had a typically short life for a BR Standard, of just 15 years.
