| The mosaic of Achilles is uncovered in House of Poseidon. The search of Odysseus for Achilles at the palace of King Lycomedes , the King of the Island of Skyros is depicted. In the centre of the frame is Achilles with a spear in his right hand and a shield in his left hand. As he approaches to Odysseus, his head is turned to his lover, Deidameia. He is dressed as a woman and his hair is red. To his left is Deidemeia, the King's daughter with her sad expression and to his right Odysseus takes place. The round hilt of his sword is attached to his right shoulder with a belt. Next to his head, the soldier wearing a helmet plays the war trumpet. Odysseus watches Achilles who reveals his identity as he grabs the weapons on hearing the sound of the trumpet. To the left of the scene, King Lycomedes who is crowned with a white ribbon gazes at Achilles. There is a soldier bearing a yellow oval shield behind the King. While two of the other figures from the royal family watch the scene, a veiled figure looks to the left. The place of the scene resembles a hall where grooved Doric columns support the architrave .

Thetis and her husband hide their son, Achilles in disguise of a woman by dressing him like one, colouring his hair red and send him to the court of King Lycomedes on the Island of Skyros to avoid him from fighting in the Trojan War. Achilles gets used to the comfort and joy of the palace, and enjoys living among the King's daughters. On learning from Calchas, the oracle of the Achaeans, that Troy could never be conquered without Achilles, wise Odysseus sets out in search of the hero accompanied with a group of Achaean soldiers. He discovers him in the court of Lycomedes and admits the palace disguised as a merchant. He sets up gifts of diamonds, pearls, and precious and colourful clothing and perfumes in the court in front of the daughters of the King. He puts fabulous weapons among these. While most girls were choosing the gifts, one of the soldiers plays the war trumpet. However, Achilles rushes to the weapons, grabs the spear and shield among the gifts. Thus, the same scene is depicted on the mosaic by a mosaic artist from Zeugma.

The mosaic is unearthed during the salvage excavations carried out at Zeugma by the supervision of the Directorate of the Gaziantep Museum (by director F.Bulgan, responsibility M.Önal) in the fall of 1999 |
