The Castle from the old jetties

Ships moored by the wooden jetties (or ‘staithes’) at the Castle gate and their cargo of coal was dragged in tubs by horses around the north side of the Castle to the top of the kilns.

The finished quick lime was then taken back to the staithes for export.
