The sculpture was erected in memory of the Spitfire designer, Reginal Mitchell (Born in Butt Lane, Staffordshire, he also designed the Schnieder Trophy winning seaplane amongst others). The sculpture is a stainless steel made from a design by the artist Suhail Shaikh, which he also used to produce the smaller scale paper representation on show at the Potteries Museum and Art Gallery.
