Barbed Comment

This is a 1CM section of a feather on the dreamcatcher shown in the first comment box below.

 

A feather is made up of several parts. The central shaft of the feather is called the rachis. The rachis has many branches called barbs. Each barb has many smaller branches called barbules. The barbules have tiny hooks called barbicels that hold them together and create a flat surface on the feather called the vane. The vane is what gives the feather its shape and helps it to fly.
