Free at last........

Blue herons are carnivores that eat a variety of aquatic and land prey, including fish, frogs, turtles, young birds, bird eggs, snakes, insects, mice, moles, gophers and other small mammals.

At Cameron Prairie NWR this past weekend, I witnessed this Great Blue Heron in its attempt to capture and devour a snake. The GBH's initial try was met with great resistance as the snake coiled itself around its beak as to prevent full consumption.

After a 10 minute wait and no release of the snakes grip, the Heron changed his technique by spreading its beak, dropping its head (as shown), and thrashing about until the snake was freed and completely regurgitated.

In the end the snake became tired and finally the Heron gulped down the entire snake.......just like that last delicious string of spaghetti.

Thanks for stopping by and I am grateful for any comments left.

Have a great week ahead !
