A bird's eye view of a former palace courtyard in north Vietnam. This palace once belonged to a Hmong King who incorporated Chinese influences into the design of the building. Many Chinese houses of old featured courtyards which served many purposes, including an open space for natural light, air circulation, and a communal space for family gatherings, celebrations, and daily activities. Courtyards also promote balance in line with the principles of Feng Shui, which emphasizes the flow of energy, health, prosperity, and harmony.
