Fish Trap Village
If you ever find yourself in Hanoi, make sure to visit the Thu Sy Commune in Hung Yen Province. It’s only about an hour outside the city. There you will meet Mr. Luong Son Bac. At almost 80 years old, he is one of the last skilled craftsmen in Vietnam still making bamboo fish and shrimp traps. He uses his knife and teeth to peel strips of bamboo which are then used to weave into the various types of traps. It takes about an hour of weaving to make one trap. Back when many people in the countryside made their living from growing rice, they would supplement their income by catching fish and shrimps to sell, hence the need for these traps.
