Sunrise on the Ganges River in Varanasi. Varanasi is the Hindu holy city - comparable to Mecca for Muslims or Jerusalem for Christians. It is the place where every Hindu believer wishes to visit and die in if possible, and have their bodies cremated and ashes thrown into the holy river. The funeral pyres burn all day and night here, filling the entire city with a smoky haze that gives rise to eerie sunrises like this. Early in the morning a lot of boat drivers ply the river to take tourists and pilgrims sightseeing, and many bring food to feed the rather large population of pigeons here.
