Hamilton/Trenton/Bordentown Marsh
The Marsh is home to over 1,200 species of plants and animals, including approximately 238 species of birds including ducks, geese, wading birds and Ospreys. Looking at the ducks, you wonder if they're the descendants of those that Lenni Lanape hunted thousands of years ago in this very marsh. Its rich history continues with European settlement which began in 1682. The Watson House, Mercer County's the oldest building was built on the marsh in 1708 and is still located on the property. Joseph Bonaparte (Napoleon's bother) built a mansion on the marsh and lived here from 1816 to 1838, sadly his mansion is no longer there. Charles Conrad Abbott, noted archaeologist and naturalist occupied the "Abbott House" on the edge of the marsh from 1874 to 1914. Many Native American artifacts have been recovered from the marsh and are on view at the NJ State Museum.
