15_Magura MT8 Raceline Rear
Brakes on early mountain bikes where cantilever. They were clumsy and working well in sunny California. Everywhere else maintenance was a pain: setting up the pads and changing cables where a challenge for most mechanics.
In 1987, a German Brand released hydraulic brakes. The Magura HS33 almost instantly set a new standard: “get the product first time right” could have been the motto as they are still offering the same brake in their lineup today.
Powerful (compared to rim brakes), once installed extremely easy maintenance. And no cables anymore as they are hydraulic. They are still today the go to brakes for trial riders!
Soon after launch, in the 90’s, Magura launched a neon yellow version, called “raceline” as a signature break. You could instantly recognize those on the first downhill MTB in the Grundig World-cup. John Tomac rode them.

Today, Magura is leading a lot of test on disc brakes and their light XC version is the MT8 SL with carbon and titanium hardware. They only produced a limited set of Raceline tribute versions, but for a neo retro build, such brakes were mandatory.
