Rufous-vented chachalaca (Ortalis ruficauda) portrait, Tobago Plantations, Tobago

This strange, turkey-like, galliforme bird has a world distribution almost entirely restricted to Venezuela -- and Tobago. (It is not found in neighbouring Trinidad.) On Tobago it is abundant; its loud cackling "coc-eri-co, coc-eri-co!" can be heard everywhere along the forest edges in the early morning. The female answers the male at a slightly higher pitch. They hop clumsily from branch to branch, although they are quite capable of flight.
