Plain chachalaca (Ortalis vetula), El Cuyo, Yucatan, Gulf of Mexico
The last bird of the trip. I had despaired of capturing them, since they mainly inhabit the dense undergrowth of the coastal scrub, making their presence not visible but unwelcome to many with their loud, raucous cackles at dawn. Their ability to keep to cover comes in handy as a protection from the attacks of the pet cats of local humans. I finally managed this half-decent shot before the subject again dived into the bush. Even when they are visible, their very "plainness" makes them difficult to portray adequately.
These gallinaceous birds live year-round in bushy habitats, especially in forests with a well-developed understorey. Stream corridors with plenty of tall trees and undergrowth attract chachalacas in particular. Further south, in Central America, they are also found in wetter environments, including rainforests.
Breeds from southern Texas to Nicaragua.
