Savanna vulture (Cathartes burrovianus), El Cuyo, Yucatan, Gulf of Mexico

... grasping a dead fish which appears to be somewhat past its sell-by date. This vulture, like other New World Vultures, is also able to locate its food by smell -- remarkably even if buried. Breeds from Mexico to Uruguay. Although smaller, the species appears very similar to the turkey vulture in flight, so I am unable to gauge its abundance relative to the latter, as I initially mistakenly assumed that the vultures I saw in flight were turkey vultures (or if the jizz was different, black vultures, which are also not uncommon in Yucatan). New World vultures, incidentally, do not belong to the same family as Old World vultures, but instead are more closely related to storks.
