Great-tailed grackle (Quiscalus mexicanus) foraging on the beach, Rio Lagartos, Gulf of Mexico

Ubiquitous species in Rio Lagartos. Impossibly lanky, attenuated bird. Despite the small cranium, highly intelligent. Males have a wide repertoire of calls, from melodious whistles to rusty-gate-hinge noises, sounds which might be said to replace the chirps of the absent house sparrow. Breeds from Peru to the western United States.
