Tui (Prosthemadera novaeseelandiae), Te Anau, New Zealand

The tui is a medium-sized bird endemic to New Zealand. The white "lawyer's collar" is a normal part of the plumage. The species belongs to the Australasian honeyeater family meliphagidae. The splashes of yellow on the forehead and flank are indications that it has been feeding on the pollen from the New Zealand flax (Phormium tenax) on which it is perching. (The plant is so named because Maoris used its fibres to weave textiles, not because it is in any way related to the northern hemisphere flax plant.) From a slide.
