Zygophyllum stapfii, Cape Cross, Namibia
The German settlers called this plant Talerstrauch, which means taler shrub, because the thick, round leaves were thought to resemble coins. The taler was an Austrian coin. The leathery skin of the leaves is an adaptation to conserve moisture in the arid Namib Desert, where in parts there is only 4 mm of rain per year.
