Brown quail (Synoicus ypsilophorus) portrait, North Island, New Zealand

A species native to Australia and New Guinea and introduced to New Zealand. The introduction of this species in the 1860s and 1870s may have played a role in the extinction of the native and endemic New Zealand quail (Coturnix novaezelandiae), in that it may have introduced a disease to which the New Zealand species was not resistant. From a slide.
