Southern lapwing (Vanellus chilensis), Tobago Plantations, Tobago

The handsome southern lapwing is also a bird of wetlands, but it is not fussy; it only requires a little moisture in the vicinity.

It might be described as the sentinel of the marshes, since, whenever the remotest threat is perceived, flocks utter prolonged and loud, high-pitched chittering until the danger is regarded as over.

The bird breeds from Nicaragua to Tierra del Fuego, and is expanding its range; it is a relative newcomer to Tobago, having first nested on the island in 1974.
