Wattled jaçana (Jacana jacana), Tobago Plantations, Tobago

Like the gallinules, the jaçana uses long toes to spread its weight and prevent it from sinking as it walks across the lily pads. The word jaçana is another bird name the Portuguese acquired from the Amazonian Tupi Indians. The alternative name is lily-trotter. Jaçanas are rare among bird species in that it is the male which incubates the eggs and cares for the young. Breeds in much of South America and in Panama.
