Cattle egret (Bubulcus ibis) portrait, Tobago Plantations, Tobago

The cattle egret, as the name suggests, feeds on prey disturbed by the movements of grazing animals. It has become commensal with humans, no longer associating with wild animals in most regions, but rather with cattle and other farm animals. It is gregarious, also nesting in colonies. It has made one of the most extraordinary range expansions of any bird. From its heartlands it has spread to Africa and thence to the Americas. It has become cosmopolitan. Birds have even been sighted in Fiji.
