Spotted sandpiper (Actitis macularius), Little Rockly Bay, Tobago
Further along the beach a small wader was encountered on the tideline. Turned out to be a spotted sandpiper. This New World species forms a superspecies with the common sandpiper (A. hypoleucos) of Eurasia. In nonbreeding plumage they look identical, but the spotted develops black spots on the belly in breeding plumage. The appearance of the first such spots can be detected on this bird.
