Male white-lined tanager (Tachyphonus rufus), Cuffie River

The female is chestnut brown. Another species previously photographed. The name comes from the white on the underwing coverts. The word 'tanager' comes from 'tangara', a word for a bird in the Tupi language of Brazil. Not to be confused with the similar but unrelated shiny cowbird. The species breeds from Costa Rica to northern Argentina.
