Cuffie River rainforest

Tobago is blessed with a variety of habitats other than idyllic sandy beaches. Its Main Ridge Forest Reserve is the oldest nature reserve in the Western Hemisphere, having been protected since the 18th century. The Cuffie River rainforest shown here is secondary forest, adjacent to the Main Ridge. At this time of year the landscape is dotted with the brilliant orange flowers of the immortelle tree (Erythrina fusca), one of the most widespread of all tropical tree species.
