American black vultures (Coragyps atratus) feasting on a dead raccoon, Florida
Not to be confused with the black vulture of Europe. New World vultures belong to a different family, being more closely related to storks. The American black vulture shares habitat and range with the similar turkey vulture, except that it does not occur in the more temperate latitudes, being unable to ride the cooler thermals there. It is thus distributed only from the southern United States to northern Argentina.
