Ottelia muricata, an aquatic, floating plant photographed in the Okavango Delta, Botswana

Only the flowering stems rise above the water surface. I can find little information on the web about this seemingly obscure plant, not even a vernacular name. It is a member of the Hydrocharitaceae family, which includes the frogbits (Hydrocharis) of European waters. O. muricata is distributed from the Congo to southern Namibia. Prefers wetlands with a dry season, as in the Okavango, where it is common. From a Fujichrome slide taken in 2005.
