Above the mar de nubes (cloud sea) at sunset, Tenerife
A curious phenomenon on Tenerife is that the island has such high elevations that one can sometimes observe the clouds from above, as one would from an aircraft at height. There may be a meeting of cool, humid trade winds which breeze in at a low level from the north east, and hot, dry air from the south, which may be stationary over the island at above 1500m. The hot, southern air prevents the cooler northern air from rising, acting as a lid which keeps the cooler clouds compressed at around 800-1000m above sea level. From a slide.
