Turnagain Arm and Chugach Range, Alaska
The Chugach Mountains tower more than 1400 m above this fjord-like inlet of the sea. Captain Cook was the first European to explore it, in the 18th century. He was looking for the fabled Northwest Passage, an ice-free route connecting the North Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. The waterway is in fact a dead end, forcing the captain to "turn again".
