Surfbird (Calidris virgata) on barnacle-encrusted rocks, Halibut Cove, Alaska

The surfbird breeds on the tundra of Alaska and the Yukon, migrating south to spend the winter as far south as Tierra del Fuego in some cases. As a rocky-shore specialist, it occupies the niche of the North Atlantic purple sandpiper in the Pacific. From a slide.
