The bleak township of St Paul is the main settlement on the island of the same name in the Pribilof Islands, Alaska
These remote volcanic islands (hence the sombre basaltic dunes) were discovered by Russia in 1786. They were probably previously uninhabited. They lie 320 km across the Bering Sea from the nearest point on the Alaskan mainland. Total human population of the islands around 570. Population of breeding seabirds considerably in excess of this. Both communities subsist largely on fishing! From a slide.
