Anhinga (Anhinga anhinga) drying wings, Everglades, Florida

Like cormorants, the anhinga needs to spread its wings to dry them. Unlike ducks and other water birds, their feathers are not oily: they need to absorb water so that the bird sinks, the better to dive for its fish prey, which it spears with its sharp bill. Widely distributed in wetlands from the southern United States to South America. Similar species are found in the Old World.
