Breadfruit (Artocarpus altilis), Praslin Island, Seychelles

The breadfruit tree -- mulberry family -- is native to Indonesia and the Philippines. The texture of the fruit is similar to that of fresh bread, and it tastes vaguely of potato. It was prized by the imperialist British in the 18th century as a possible source of cheap nutrition for slaves in the Caribbean. It was on an expedition to the Pacific islands to transport breadfruit trees to the Caribbean that the unfortunate Captain Bligh became the victim of the mutiny on the Bounty. The breadfruit tree is now naturalised widely in the tropics.
