Broad Pass, Alaska Range, central Alaska
The Alaska Range is the backbone of the region, running roughly from west to east and containing North America's highest peak, Mount Denali (6193m). Yet somehow the south side of the range, seen here, escaped glaciation in the Ice Age. The fluted sides of the mountains bear witness to this. It is though -- for how much longer remains to be seen! -- extremely cold and we are here at the tree line, where even the white spruce can only manage scattered stands. The green on the lower slopes is comprised mainly of willow scrub. The human population is sparse. Image made from a slide shot in July using a high-ISO Kodachrome film.
