Collared araçari (Pteroglossus torquatus), Milpe Reserve, Ecuador
This is a species of toucan, breeding from southern Mexico to Ecuador. Toucans are forest birds, nesting in cavities in trees. Their enormous bills are of little use in the excavation of nesting holes; they take over previously existing cavities. The bills are very light and males apparently use them to spar with other males to establish dominance. Their food is mainly fruit.
