Inner City Church, Erzsebet Bridge
Erzsebet = Hungarian for Elisabeth, the beloved Habsburg empress who learned the Magyar language and was assassinated by an anarchist in 1898. The bridge was completed soon after her murder, in a style similar to that of the next bridge to the south, the Szabadsag. However the Erzsebet Bridge was destroyed in 1945 and replaced in the early 1960s with this strikingly different design. Its unadorned modernity contrasts, perhaps pleasingly, with the Baroque intricacy of the towers of the Inner City Parish Church.
