Canarian convolvulus (Convolvulus caput-medusae), at Cañada del Rio, the desert on the isthmus of the Jandía Peninsula, Fuerteventura, Canary Islands

This rare plant grows only on the islands of Gran Canaria and Fuerteventura. The function of the cushion form is puzzling. I have previously seen it as a protection against extreme cold. Perhaps here the shade it provides protects the interior of the plant from excessive heat? From a slide.
